He reaches out and caresses the brass doorknob.  His fingers stiffen from its cold, contrasting with the warmth of the room. He hesitates as he stares at the tall, brown, wooden door. His hand twists, causing a metallic click.  As the portal opens, soft light behind him cascades across the floor of a pitch-black room. When he pulls the door closed the outside light retreats, leaving a darkness interrupted by meandering clouds of soft abstract colors, reflecting truths.  Silence.

“I don’t know if this is real but I have been given an opportunity to talk to you…I asked for a conversation but only promised the chance to talk to you.”

He shrugs his shoulders.

“I love you. I didn’t say that the last time we were together. Or, at least I don’t remember saying it.”

Pregnant pause. The atmosphere sucks away the feeling of being.  Whispers of music invade the void reflecting the same abstract truths as the floating colors. His expression softens as he absorbs the realities given to him.

“I had so many things to say. Now, as I think of them, they seem trivial or wrong.” He hesitates, and then a smile slowly creeps across his face as he stares into the dark.  Suddenly his head jerks up. “I love you….and, thanks for being a part of my life.” His mouth stays open as if he would say something else, then it closes.

Awareness invades his mind as he leaves the darkness.
